Application of the winkelpicker fishing method

In the past, fishing with delicate tackle was the domain of float fishing with reel-less rods. Today the most common fishing is with a reel using the bottom method, which is less delicate. The winkelpicker method has changed bottom fishing a lot. Using the winkelpicker method in running water is a very good way to catch large bream and roach.
Bream and roach have been fished for decades mainly with fishing rods without a reel. This method was constantly modified and improved. New materials – like carbon fiber or Kevlar – have made, that the rods have become simply perfect. The lines produced are getting thinner and stronger, and their knot strength continues to increase. There was also a tendency to fish with delicate equipment. It was started by a rubber shock absorber, which was tied to the rod tip. Despite various modifications, the use of a rod without a reel had one major drawback. Maximum distance, on which you could fish, it never exceeded the length of the fishing rod and the line attached to it. This very often resulted in such situations by the water, where the fish were simply unreachable for the angler. For example, relatively deep fishery makes, that you fish at "length."” fishing rods. In the late 1980s, coarse fish anglers switched to a new type of rod called the winkelpicker. Tell the truth, they were not a new invention. I "toporny” The prototype are the rods with a special tip that signals bites, which have been used in England for decades (typu „Quiver”). "Novelty” however, she "grabbed" and off 1984 r. winkelpicker rods have gained many fans. Articles in the fishing press and this, that the manufacturers of equipment see a great future for these rods, they have also done their job.

Briefly defining – the winkelpicker rod is a short extension rod with a very thin tip, which, thanks to its high sensitivity, allows you to feel every bite. It is caught on thin lines with bottom lead or a feeder. Currently, in bottom angling, a lot of fish are caught in this way, and these are mainly nice specimens of bream and roach.

In this article, I want to present the most important principles of fishing with a winkelpicker. I hope, that beginner anglers will find it helpful in eliminating basic mistakes in the art of fishing and quickly mastering the correct technique of fishing. In these few sentences it is impossible, unfortunately, presentation of all topics related to learning to fish with this method. However, I have a quiet hope, that many of you will benefit from the comments in this text.

The tip as a bite indicator

Winkelpicker rods consist of three parts. Previously, they were made of glass fiber. Currently, they are in most cases made of carbon fiber reinforced materials and have a length of 2.40 into 3 meters. The universal length is 2,70 m. The bottom part with the handle is the longest part of the rod, which most often has one grommet. It is used to organize and properly orient the lines coils falling from the reel spool. The middle part of the rod gets narrower and narrower towards the tip. Part three, that is, the tip, is a bite indicator. The best tip is this one, which has a parabolic action when bent. It is located along its entire length 5 or 6 guide vias and a very small end guide. The handle of a good winkelpicker rod is made of cork and is approximately one-fifth the length of the entire rod. So it is very long. The handle is flattened on some sticks (e.g.. „Multipicker” DAM), so that the reel can be attached better. A firmly fixed reel should be as high as possible on the handle. Recently, many winkelpicker rods have factory-fitted ring reel seats. Please pay attention when buying, that the rings are as close as possible to the first via.

The winkelpicker rod has from 10 into 14 vias. More of them is not recommended due to too much line friction, which would shorten the throw distance. Too small a diameter of the vias would result, that the line would enter too “spirally” when cast”. This would also lead to more friction. The action of the winkelpicker rod can be compared to the action of the "Quiver" rod. Means. that it is very stiff from the butt end to about two-thirds of its length. The top of the rod has a parabolic action and is very durable. I would like to write a little more about the rod tip itself. Fishing shops have a very large selection of winkelpicker rods. Many of them only have one, the tip already fitted. Others have three. and even four spares” interchangeable tips. The individual tips vary in terms of strength, which would suggest, that they are intended for use in a variety of conditions. This is a general view on the subject and can be put into practice, although it does not have to be the rule at all.
Friends, already fishing with winkelpicker rods, will agree with me. that's the thinnest tip, which is the most sensitive and shows bites best, it is most useful for this type of fishing.
Ten years of practice in this field convinced me of it completely. Everybody, who believe, that in strong current running water a suitably thicker rod tip should be used, are wrong. A thin tip will also perfectly fulfill its task under these conditions, even with high water pressure on the line. In the worst case, it will bend at some angle. However, it will still be more responsive than the fatter one.

Low weight

In principle, any lightweight reel is suitable for fishing with the winkelpicker method. It should be added here, that a relatively good reel should be used for this method. A small weight of the reel is important to keep a good balance between it and a light rod. In addition, the reel should have a good drag that can be very precisely regulated. Whether the brake knob is on the spool or on the back of the reel does not really matter, and it depends only on the taste of the angler. In most cases, the reels work very lightly and smoothly. Deciding to buy one of them for a winkelpicker rod, should be checked, is it well balanced. While turning the handle you should not feel any vibrations of the housing of the working reel. Only perfectly balanced reels are suitable for our method, not transmitting any vibrations to a sensitive rod. This is important for the currently popular long-cast reels (Long cast), whose center of gravity is well ahead and they are not always stable.

If possible, the spool should have a special clamp, in which the line is attached after the throw has been taken. Thanks to this simple procedure, the line will be pulled from the spool only to the "marked" spool during the next cast” distances. It is very important, if you want to fish in the same spot all the time. The proper functioning of the bail also plays an important role. I mean it, that it should open easily and easily and – more importantly – securely and quickly close. Such a perfectly working bow will later turn out to be very important when fishing. Due to this, that the most common fishing is with thin lines, I use flat spools for a reel. It has sufficient capacity, to reel on her 100-150 m of fishing line in diameter 0,18 Mm.

Good postponement

Rod rests are inextricably linked with the winkelpicker method, because the rod is always placed on the 2 supports. The butt of the rod can be held in the hand, but it is more profitable to put it on a support. Then the rod lies evenly and calmly and thanks to this, even the most delicate bites are visible. The second support serves to support the fishing rod more or less at this point, where the tip begins to change to the center. Sometimes, when the rod bends too much, A third stand is also needed.
Anglers who fish with the winkelpicker method usually have all the equipment carefully assembled. There will also be telescopic supports. They are needed in situations, when it is impossible to hammer the support leg into place.
The prop itself is quite wide, which allows the rod to be moved along it during fishing to tighten or loosen the line, as already mentioned, the winkelpicker is always caught from the bottom. There are techniques, too, allowing you to fish above the bottom (the so-called. Rolling Trolling with "traveling lead"), however, in this article I will only discuss classic ground fishing. Therefore, for proper fishing from the bottom, we need an appropriate weight. You can use a lightweight feeder instead of lead, however, it cannot be too heavy. The winkelpicker rod is not basically a television rod.

Methods of mounting lead weights:

Every throw is accurate

In most cases, pear-shaped lead weights with a wire handle are used. Conical or disc-shaped weights are also good. They can be attached to the set in many different ways. A lead stopper is used to stop the through-weight. Teflon stoppers are now also available. They do not damage the line and stay well on it. Because in the winkelpicker method it is essential, to always throw the same distance – which is not that simple at all – the already mentioned clamping clip is helpful here. It does not allow the line to fall off the spool beyond the distance marked by it. The correct direction of the throw is also important, because even a small deviation from the desired direction of the cast gives many meters differences when fishing at long distances. If you want to hit the same place, grasp the casting rod with both hands, and after it is done, set the rod to the starting position. As a landmark you choose, for example,. tree or bush in the background. The precision of the throw will be demonstrated by the method, how the line comes off the spool. Also pay attention to this, that the spool is always perfectly filled with line. This greatly reduces the friction of the line against the edge of the spool.

Although fishing with the winkelpicker method seems not very complicated at first glance, achieving success is possible only after mastering all the rules related to it. As already mentioned, it is always caught in exactly the same way, previously baited place.

The way the rod is positioned varies depending on the distance, on which we fish. Relatively close to the shore when fishing, the angle between the tip and the line should be 90 °. As the distance increases, this angle increases more and more.

A tender tip can indicate bites in two ways. It most accurately announces the taking, when the fish begins to move away from the angler. The tip then bends more and more towards the water. If it only moves slightly, it means taking, to which you should react with a lightning-fast cut. Complete straightening of the tip means, that the fish, after taking the bait, moves towards the angler. In this case, also jam quickly, but not too hard. It is enough to grasp the fishing rod in the hand and tighten the line. The fish will jam due to the weight of the lead or feeder used. Pay attention to this, that the reel brake is always well adjusted. Slightly adjusting the brake may cause, that the fish would not get stuck very well, strong tightening most often leads to the line breaking.

Finally, one more important note. You can influence the better catch result in the winkelpicker method by using, depending on the situation, leaders of different lengths or moving a lead stopper on the line. Experimenting with the length of the leader is unique to this method of fishing. The same applies to the "correct" setting of the stopwatch on the line. You will find out for yourself when fishing for the optimal length of the leader. Too many empty bites usually means, that the leader is too short and it jams too quickly. A deeply swallowed bait testifies, that we noticed the bites too late, ie the leader is too long.
