Fishing for zander with artificial bait

Summer is the best time to catch zander with artificial bait. Twisters are in the lead in this respect. The whole last year for me and my colleagues "on the stick” it was marked by zanders. Our method was characterized by this, that we only used artificial lures for fishing. The results we achieved have exceeded all, even the wildest expectations. Together, we caught over a hundred zander. So, you read it right, more than 100 zander. For artificial bait? So, for artificial bait. Some of the fish caught were unusually large. We managed to cross the "magic" several times” border 90 cm in length, and there were 80-centimeter individuals, that we did not keep up with counting them. Of course, we also caught smaller specimens, but in most cases they were fish in excess of 50 Cm. So I can say, that this year was exceptionally successful. In most countries, it is not allowed to catch zander until June. Unable to control ourselves, we go to the water and try various promising lures, although it is still a bit early to catch these fish.
At the beginning of June, zanders are usually immediately after spawning and take care of their offspring. I consider, that in the first weeks of the season, everyone, who has the good of these fish at heart, should release them back into the water after catch. After all, zander have to look after their eggs and brood for so long, as necessary. This concern for the welfare of the fish will repay us later on, an interest. In the waters, where I go fishing with my friends, it can be seen very clearly.

Peak stick action

After spawning, zander are quite aggressive and zero in on well. It is very beneficial for us, because they now rush greedily at the artificial bait being fed to them and are relatively easy to catch. So it could be the court, zander can only be caught with spinning in the summer months. However, our method of fishing brings good results also in autumn and during the mild winter months. The most important thing in zander fishing equipment is the right rod. It should be a spinning stick with a casting weight of approx. 12 g. Of course, when you buy it, you will decide for yourself about the "right choice" for the try-on” to buy, however, I would suggest opting for a stick with a top action. I do know, that most anglers consider parabolic action rods to be much better, but they should not always be preferred. A spinning rod used for fishing zander with artificial bait must be very fast in its action. I mean the speed of reacting to the fish and the speed of performing all activities while fishing. Tip action rods have all these advantages and they are definitely superior to media action rods. Tip action rods have one essential property: they are much less tolerant of the mistakes made by the angler. Mistakes made while hauling a large fish most often lead to its loss. Luckily. learning to operate a tip-action stick correctly, we will not have to immediately confront our skills with a huge specimen. Catching smaller fish at the beginning will allow us to quickly eliminate all mistakes.

Choosing the right reel for a given rod is not that important. Rather, it is important, that it has a good drag and is suitable for fishing with a thin line. Admittedly, at the beginning of the zander season, I do not need to use very thin veins, but it becomes a must in fall and winter. On the other hand, every reel should have a perfectly functioning brake, if it is to be worth the money. Luckily, when buying a high-class or very high-class reel, there are no problems with that. However, you should expect an expense of several hundred thousand zlotys.

Glowing line

Vein? So. it should have a diameter 0.25 mm and be covered, if possible, with fluorescent paint in yellow or green color, which are most visible. You can clearly see the direction of the fish's escape during the haul.

We have a choice of twisters according to the color. Quite on the left an imitation of a leech, next to her are two Killer Shads (firmy Mepps i Da iwa): one of them is connected with the so-called. Tunker Jigem (firm DAM). This combination is perfect for shallow waters. Sassy Shiner in the center with a centrifuge blade (by Mepps); below Thread Shad – variant straight from the USA. Also a white twister next to it. Mister Mean (by Mepps) it is exceptionally catchy. Some twisters are usually a bit too long and have to have their tails trimmed (top right).

Lure number 1

I have already mentioned, that in the first months of the season, zanders are extremely aggressive. I do, however, that their high activity is not always caused by the desire to get food, but they attack the bait instinctively.
There is no need to think for a long time when choosing the right artificial bait – the twister is my number bait 1. Only the weight of the lead is important, which is his head. E.g, when fishing from a boat, we resign from the use of a heavy head. If we fish in running water, it should not be too light. In shallow water, small heads are best. The smaller the head is used for the load, the twister works better in water.

Perhaps, convincing you, that all twisters are the best lures, it's a bit premature. After all, these soft artificial lures are available in a huge selection and each of them has slightly different properties. You can't equate a twister with a long leech-shaped tail and a twister called "Killer Shad."” the „Vibro-Tail” (factory names of twisters). Many twisters come in all sorts of combinations, for example, with the Drachkovitch system. In the summer months, the appearance and serving of the twister are not that important. I use the combination of twisters on the systems' seriously” only in the fall, when the water is cooler, and the fish zero deeper and more carefully.

Each lure made of plastic combined with rubber has quite different properties. It is known, that zanders prefer artificial lures with different actions at certain times. Choosing the right twister "to your taste."” foraging fish at any given time is very important. During the first weeks of last year's season, zander did not want to take anything else, as only on "Sissy Shad”, and it is in mother-of-pearl color! Speaking of colors, it was in murky water that the pearl was best, and yellow in transparent. Right after "Sissy Shad” the most popular turned out to be a plain white twister, such as "Vibro-Tail". On this often underrated twister, we have been fishing successfully for a long time, until it was replaced by "Killer Shad”.

So you can see, that it is necessary to use many types of twisters, to effectively "satisfy” the capricious preferences of zander. Having a large number of copies of each type of twister is not that necessary. They very rarely break off when fishing from a boat. After you swim to the catch point, you must skillfully pull the line in the opposite direction to this one, in which we pulled the twister, and for the most part it is released without difficulty.

When fishing from the bank, the probability of breaking the twister is slightly higher. If it gets caught, try to release it using the shot method. To do this, tighten the brake of the reel and stretch the line on the stick to the breaking point. Then grab the line with the index finger as for the throw and open the bail. Tension line after releasing it, "They refused” towards the catch and the twister usually releases.

Jigs are also varied. Don't forget, that ultimately it is the jig head that decides, how deep it will go and how it will work. Heads connected in a system with hooks (in the middle) they will be used only in late fall and winter, when taking zander very carefully.

It is also impossible to almost completely eliminate snagging when fishing with jumps (picking up the lure and lowering it to the bottom). The twister or the "jig" are then in frequent contact with the ground and it naturally becomes caught. From the shore it is better to fish a little above the bottom. Then we use the smallest possible head for the twister or "jig" and lead them all the time above the bottom. Of course, it should not be a uniform movement. We wind the fishing line once a little faster, once a little slower and from time to time tear the rod tip upwards or to the side. All these activities do, with twister or jig” he will "dance” in the water in a way that is attractive to fish. If the bait head hits the bottom while reeling the line. the tip should be held higher and the crank should be turned a little faster.

When fishing from a boat, it is exactly the opposite. In other words: when the bait approaches the boat, turn the crank or slower (i) put the rod tip into the water. This will prevent it from being dragged in excessively high parts of the water. I have noticed. that in summer zanders attack the bait, which works at a height of approx 1 m over day.

Correct (on the left) and a bad connection between the tail and the head. Pay attention to this, so that the tail of the twister is far from the hook. Otherwise it will stick” it will stick to the hook when thrown and cover the blade.

Jig pulled behind the boat

(Pulling the boat, i.e. the so-called. cab, unlike most European countries, is forbidden in Poland).
Very few anglers catch zander on a "cab"”. It amazes me a bit, because it is an excellent method of catching these fish, especially at the beginning of the season. I have already fished with my friends on the bait pulled by a boat in many different water reservoirs. Each time we were able to observe a certain regularity – all zanders were mostly at the same depth, its on 3-5 m.

After catching a zander in known deep water 3 meters is very likely. that the next copies will also take at this depth. To successfully catch zander, one should therefore try to "define” the depth of their occurrence, and then just try to keep it! If, on the other hand, there are no bites at the chosen depth, you should lead the lure a little deeper or a little shallower. The selected places must therefore be checked very carefully along the entire depth of the water. When looking for zanders, I use a slightly longer rod, giving a better opportunity to accurately pass the bait. So, like when fishing from the bank, I try to lead the jig as close to the bottom as possible and like that, that it moves like a catfish in the water, that is, slowly and dignified. All of this should do, that there will be a lot of nice zander in the net. The speed of the boat should be selected according to the depth of the fishery, that the bait penetrates the bottom area. If, for example, we want to fish at depth 4 m, then we're going against the wind with speed 1-1,5 km/h. You should remember this, that in this case "jig” pull a little closer to the boat, than if we were going with the wind at a speed of approx. 2 km/h.

The closer the bait is to the boat, the fewer unhashed bites there are. Means, that it is best to pull the bait against the wind. Wanting to be sure, she "yig” will be working just on the seabed, after the throw has been taken, it should be allowed to sink to the bottom, then pull it up a little and start pulling. It is good to gently pull the tip of the stick towards you, then quickly lower it and slowly pull it back to its original position. Such a procedure will make the operation of the lure in the water very attractive. „Jig” then it descends slowly towards the bottom. Most of the bites take place during the descent of the lure and as it turns out, they are very energetic.

Horse-drawn carriage fishing” for two fishing rods you have to learn. The rods must be of different lengths, so that the lures do not become tangled with each other, different in terms of weight. A bait with a larger head is towed on a shorter line closer to the boat (then it does not go too deep); lighter jig ” it is towed twice behind the boat. Rye should not be too soft – the lure will sink faster, and the jam will also be easier.
